How often should I visit the dentist?

Patients should visit the dentist office at least twice a year, or every six months for general and preventive dentistry services. This should include checkups and cleanings in order to maintain tooth and gums health. The dentist will check for signs of decay and diseases such as periodontal disease and oral cancer.

How often do I need to have dental x-rays?

This will depend on the patient’s oral health needs and other factors. Regular x-rays are very beneficial for identifying diseases and other issues which develop below the gum line, on the interior of the tooth, and in the jaws. Today's dental x-rays will also use a very limited amount of radiation, and even a lifetime of dental x-rays pose a very low health risk.

How can I tell if I have gum disease?

In its preliminary stages, gum disease can cause very few or even no symptoms. Some patients might experience some minor bleeding when brushing and flossing, though others may not have any symptoms until the condition has gotten much worse. As the disease advances, bleeding gums, tenderness, swelling of the gums, gums which look very red, sore or loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss can result from a more severe form of the disease called periodontitis.

What happens during a routine visit?

Initially, patients will be requested to update their medical history. This can help the doctor identify any risk factors for oral health problems. The dentist will look at the patients’ teeth and evaluate their health. Teeth will also be carefully cleaned using special techniques, paying special attention to spots where plaque has built up. Once the cleaning is finished, the dentist will be able to offer patients tips for improving their oral hygiene techniques so they can rid themselves of plaque and bacteria more effectively. This can decrease their risk of developing gum disease. Next, each tooth will be thoroughly examined for indications of decay and patients will receive an oral cancer screening. Lastly, patients will get suggestions for additional treatments and they will also have time to ask questions about their treatment and their dental health.
